Muslin

Did you know that muslin (pronounced “muhz·luhn”) fabric dates back to 1298 CE, when Marco Polo described the cloth in his book The Travels?! Due to muslin fabric's unique breathable weave and durability in layers, it used to be considered a luxury fabric as highly prized as silk! 

Tabby Silk

Tabby silk is a soft, shiny, and breathable fabric that is made using a plain weave, also known as a tabby weave

Muslin

• Washing

  You can wash muslin in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold or lukewarm water. You can also hand wash with warm water and gentle scrubbing. 

• Detergent

  Use a gentle, natural detergent that's free of harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets. 

• Drying

  Air drying is best to maintain the fabric's shape and prevent shrinkage. If you do use a dryer, use a low-heat setting and remove the item before it's completely dry.

Tabby Silk: 

• Use a mesh bag

  Place silk garments in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging and friction during the wash cycle. 

• Use cold water

  Use cold or tepid water (under 86ºF) to be gentle on the silk fibers. Hot water can cause the silk to shrink and lose its luster. 

• Use a mild detergent

  Use a mild detergent, or one specifically designed for silk. Avoid using bleach, which can damage the silk's natural fibers. 

• Wash colors separately

  Wash silk colors separately to prevent color staining and maintain the fabric's shine. 

• Avoid the dryer

  Tumble drying is not recommended because the high heat can shrink or damage the fabric. Instead, lay wet silk flat on a clean, absorbent towel to remove excess moisture. Then, unroll and repeat with a second dry towel. Finally, lay flat on a drying rack or dry towel out of direct sunlight.
